Thanks to the European Commission's pressure, the Hungarian government has finally decided to draft a law that would end the Szerencsejáték Zrt's monopoly, legalizing and regulating the online gaming market. Szerencsejáték Zrt is Hungary’s National Lottery and largest gambling service in the country.
Currently, the state-run Szerencsejáték Zrt enjoys the monopoly on all gaming activities, whilst any gambling through another party is considered illegal by the Hungarian law.
Apparently, one of the critical issues of the Hungarian government will be the taxation, which must be “competitive” with other EU-member states.
Hungarian gamers will soon be able to choose from a greater variety of games than before. The government is currently seeking to recruit the best casino operators in the world. Bids from established operators are expected to be placed until May 16th.
Highest and lowest bidders will be made public in June of this year.
