The world's largest online poker website PokerStars has decided to support the online gambling legislation proposed in Nevada. The company added its name to a growing list of powerful lobbyists in the US which want to force the Nevada Gaming Commission to licence, permit and regulate online poker.
In order to increase their influence in the US online market, PokerStars has hired a former Nevada Gaming Control Board member, Randall Sayre, decorated with the honour of Gaming Regulator of the Year in 2009 by the International Master of Gaming Law.
"We can stand on the beach and let it wash over us, or we can recognize the potential economic opportunity for the state," Sayre said.
According to the Associated press, PokerStars has signed a strategic partnership with the American land-based casino operator Wynn. Apparently, the main goal of the alliance is to try to legalize and run an Internet poker business in the United States.
PokerStars, which boasts over 40 million members worldwide, creates $20 billion annually in revenue, but it could generate much more by taking advantage of the legalization of online gaming in the US.
I see internet gaming as the next extension of how Nevada reinvents itself. This is the growth vehicle for the gaming industry worldwide, said Richard Perkins, former Nevada assembly speaker and currently the PokerStars' legislative lobbyist.
According to the economist Jeremy Aguero, if the state sets up a structure requiring licensed online poker operators to be headquartered in Nevada, an estimated 1,200 direct jobs and $77 million in direct wages could result.
