In 2006, Betsson sued the Swedish government for damages of SEK 102 million ($14 million). The online sports-book and casino sued the Swedish government because of the 1997 ban imposed on nearly all land-based slot machines – except on those of monopoly company Svenska Spel.
Betsson thought the ban that force it to close down 200 slot machines, was violating the European Union law and caused the company massive damages.
“We believe that the Swedish state is in violation of EC legislation when it prevents a private gaming company from operating in Sweden at the same time that the State's gaming enterprise aggressively markets its activities. We will therefore appeal the decision,” said the CEO, Pontus Lingwall.
The Stockholm District Court found the Swedish government guilty of violating the European Union laws, for implementing the ban without notifying the European Commission, but the Stockholm-listed gaming operator Betsson did not receive any damages.
Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwall said the ruling was “A clear case of court decay. Apparently the state can act outside the law while the law applies for everyone else.”
