PokerStars, the world's largest Internet poker room, has decided to refund with $2 million the players affected by the Chinese cheaters who made $587,000 by playing Double or Nothing (DoN) Sit and Go Tournaments on their website.
The idea of these tournaments was that 5 out of 10 participating players to double their bet. After a detailed investigation, which included the interrogation of several online players, PokerStars identified the gang of 49 Chinese players that discredited their image.
The group members sat at the same tables and exchanged information on the cards that would be doubled to eliminate other players and ensure their win.
Ironically, the cheaters have unmasked themselves. On the 24th of May, one of the cheaters, “Jane0123”, complained on a poker forum that she/he was unfairly banned from PokerStars. She/he also complained that her/his $10,000 account had been frozen. The user has soon received a reply from another forum member saying:
“Ya finally got busted, huh? Well it’s about time. I sent about 25 emails complaining about you ****ing clowns.”
Last June, when the scam was discovered, the prestigious online poker room decided to compensate the affected players by creating a $587,000 victim pool, including a $250,000 added bonus, but it finally increased the compensation pool to $2 million.
Although the Chinese players were banned from the poker room, there are still rumors running on the fact that the cheaters continued with their cheating scams.
The online poker room managed to recover only $85,000 out of the $587,000, representing the stolen amount.
“PokerStars has introduced a new security function to prevent players from certain countries from playing in the same Double or Nothing events together. This restriction will ensure that only one player from each of several countries will be able to play in these events. We continue to monitor the games for collusion and we do feel that they are now adequately secure, otherwise we wouldn’t offer them. The investigation of the accounts involved, as well compensation to players, have since been finalized,” said a PokerStars' Game Security team member, ensuring on the fact that the poker giant has taken all the necessary measures in order to prevent such incidents to happen again.
