The new French gambling regulations that recently came into force are very strict and forced many gambling operators to withdraw from the market.
On the 29th of June, Playtech banned the French players from registering into all their branded casinos. The news was surprising, as Playtech was preparing to apply for a French online gambling license since February.
Playtech's decision applies only to players who are on the French territory. Playtech casinos remain available and accessible to Francophone markets located outside France, such as Belgium, Quebec or Switzerland, UK speaking countries, Italy, Spain, Holland, Portugal, etc.
In January 2010, Playtech has signed a joint venture with Scientific Games, an American-based lottery provider, and now it seems like the leading software company set its sight on the American online gambling market.
So far, several gambling operators have applied for a French license. The luckiest companies that received licenses from the French gambling regulator ARJEL (The French Authority of Regulation of Online Games) were:
LIL Managers Ltd (FriendBet.fr): sports betting;
Reel Malta Ltd (PokerStars.fr): poker;
Electraworks SAS (PartyBets.fr , GameBookers.fr, PartyPoker.fr, ActPoker.fr, LuckyJeux.fr): poker, sports-betting;
Gaming Iliad SAS (Chilipoker.fr): poker;
Partouche Gaming France SAS (Partouche.fr): poker.
The French Authority of Regulation of Online Games also granted online gaming licenses to Everest Poker, Unibet and to the parent company of BWIN with PMU, Sajoo, SPS France Betting and Table 14 being awarded online poker licenses.
