New Study Shows Gambling Addiction Can Be Inherited
added on 2010-06-18 03:15:42

The Daily Mail reported gambling addiction can be inherited, if one of the parents is addicted to gambling. The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Missouri-Columbi and Australia's Queensland Institute of Medical Research and it involved 2,889 pairs of twins.

Researchers investigated the role of the genetic and environmental factors in the development of gambling addiction. They were particularly interested in whether these genetic and environmental factors interact in the same way for women as for men.
The team from the University of Missouri-Columbi also found out that men are twice as likely as women to develop gambling addicts. Still, there were no proofs of gender differences in the causes of problem gambling.

The findings also show that if one twin has a gambling problem, the identical twin is more likely to develop one compared to a fraternal twin. Researchers also found out that the gambling addiction is five times more common in Australia that it is in the US.

“This study represents a major step forward in that it establishes for the first time that genes are as important in the etiology of disordered gambling in women as they are in men,” the authors of the study wrote in a press statement.
